1. Levelling, Bonding and Caulking
Teak Decks

Description
of Application
Teak has been used
for hundreds of years as a decking material for ships
and boats because of its anti-rot properties.Teak is a
beautiful material in its unfinished state, but requires
an elegant solution for providing anti-slip properties
to a wet deck. In addition to adding structural strength
to the sub-deck, a teak deck contributes to extra insulation
in hot and cool climates alike.
Teak, however, is not a uniform material; oil, fat, and
resin-content, as well as porosity, differ greatly depending
on source and age. The water content of the wood changes
depending on storage conditions, duration, temperature
and humidity. |

General
Conditions
- Proper working conditions
are essential for a successful caulking result.
- Optimal results are obtained
under constant or falling temperature conditions
of between +5ÉC and +25ÉC.
- Exposure to direct sunlight
and rain during the operation and especially during
caulking needs to be avoided under all circumstances.
- Exposure to the elements
during and following each step of the Sika teak
deck application procedure needs to be prevented
for at least 8 hours.
- Good ventilation in a well-organised
working area are important factors for success.

The
Quality of the Wood
Teak planks should show vertical, standing year rings.
The core humidity content of the wood should ideally
not exceed 12%, as too high an initial humidity level
could result in excessive
shrinkage of the individual teak planks in dry air and
might overstress the Sikaflex® -290 DC joint leading
to failure.
Ideally, the humidity content of the timber should correspond
to the equivalent humidity expected in service. |
|
|
|
The
Planks
Teak planks are offered in various qualities and dimensions.
The symmetric shape is the simplest form with a separation
cut in the middle of two planks. The elasticity of the
Sikaflex® -290 DC seal is positioned to bridge the
differences in thermal and hygric movements. Asymmetric
teak planks with one-sided separation cuts are in principle
also suitable; however, the application of the bond
breaker tape requires more care. |
