Sika in brief
Sika is a global company with a total of around 80 production
and marketing companies in over 60 countries. Sika is active
in the field of speciality chemicals dividing its activities
into two business areas; the Construction Division and the
Industry Division. While on the technical side these two business
areas are closely linked, on the commercial side they reduce
the vulnerability to economic cycles because they depend on
different markets. The technological affinities permit economies
of scale in the areas of R&D, purchasing and production.
Sika is a company with a strong innovative tradition, constantly
striving for new levels of excellence. This means developing
innovative technologies that will open up new opportunities
for the company, its employees, and its partners in trade
and industry.
Sika is an independent Swiss group founded in Zurich in 1910.
Its shares are listed on the Swiss Exchange (SWX).
Sika
Australia was founded in 1976 as a member of the Sika
Group of companies wholly owned by Sika Finanz AG in Switzerland.
Initially, Sika Australia was mainly a trading company sourcing
finished products from sister companies overseas and marketing
them throughout Australia.
In the early days, a few products were already manufactured
in Australia, such as Rugasol, as well as some concrete and
mortar additives. However, the main share of the business
was construction sealants with well known products like Sikaflex®
-1A, Sikaflex® -15LM and Sikaflex® -11FC. In the mid
eighties the first industrial adhesives and sealants were
introduced with Sikaflex® -221 for sealing and bonding
in the automotive industry, Sikaflex® -255 for bonding
of windscreens and Sikaflex® -241 for the caulking of
wooden boat decks.
In 1994, Standards Australia accredited Sika Australia to
the International Quality Assurance Standard ISO 9002.
Today, Sika Australia employs more than 90 staff and produces
over 100 different products in its manufacturing plants at
Wetherill Park in NSW, Eagle Farm in Queensland, and Keysborough
in Victoria.
The company's future direction
is clearly focused on local production, thus reducing dependence
on imported products which in turn allows greater flexibility
and enables Sika Australia to tailor products for the specific
requirements of the Australian market.
The company has branches in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide
and Perth, as well as agents and distributors in Hobart, Canberra,
Townsville, Kalgoorlie, Mackay, Newcastle and Darwin.
